Difference Between OPC and PPC Cement

Social Share

Cement being the binding material is an important element in the construction process. Although when, cement mixes with water, fine and coarse aggregates, and admixture for the formation of concrete. While considering the formation of cement itself, the raw material used in it is limestone, marl, and clay. Also, it is grey in color and it gets hardened easily if exposed to air. However, cement is available in two types: OPC and PPC.

The difference between OPC and PPC cement is mentioned below:

Serial No. Properties OPC Cement PPC Cement
1.
FULL FORM
Ordinary Portland Cement Portland Pozzolana Cement
2.
RAW MATERIAL
Firstly, In the manufacture of OPC cement 60%-70% of Calcerious materials, 17%-25% of Argillaceous material, 3%-8% of alumina, 0.5%-6% of iron oxide, gypsum, magnesia, sulphur trioxide, potash, and 0.5%-1.3% of soda is used. On the other hand, in the manufacture of PPC cement 3%-5% of gypsum, 10%-25% of pozzolanic material, and 75%-77% of clinker are used.
3.
PERMEABILITY
However, OPC is highly permeable to water. PPC cement is less permeable to water and hence it is suitable for underwater structures.
4.
IS CODE
The IS Code of OPC cement is 269(2015). Whereas, the IS Code of PPC cement is 1489(Part 1&2).
5.
GRADES
There are three grades of OPC cement available i.e. 33-Grade, 43-Grade, and 53-Grade. Only one grade of PPC cement is available which is equal to the 33-grade of OPC cement.
6.
WORKABILITY
 Low High
7.
COMPRESSIVE
It can gain compressive strength of:

35 N/mm2 in 3 days.

43.4 N/mm2 in 7 days.

55 N/mm2 in 28 days.

On the contrary, it can gain compressive strength of:

29 N/mm2 in 3 days.

39 N/mm2 in 7 days.

56.5 N/mm2 in 28 days.

8.
LONG-TERM STRENGTH
Initially, the compressive strength of this cement is higher but considering long-term strength, it is comparatively low than PPC. Although, it has higher long-term strength.
9.
DURABILITY
 Low High
10.
HEAT OF HYDRATION
It takes less time in the hydration process and produces more heat. But, it takes more time in the hydration process and produces less heat.
11.
CURING TIME
It has a minimum curing time of 7-10 days. While considering PPC cement, has a minimum curing time of 10-14 days.
12.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
It emits a large amount of CO2. However, a small amount of COis released. Hence, it is environment-friendly.
13.
CHEMICAL RESISTANCE
Low More than OPC
14.
SETTING TIME
Its initial setting time is 30 min and the final setting time is 12 days. Although in PPC cement initial setting time is 30 min and the final setting time is 25 days.
15.
FINENESS
225 m2/kg 300 m2/kg
16.
COST
It is more expensive than PPC. Whereas, it is cheaper than OPC.
17.
USES
It is used in the construction of commercial and industrial complexes, high-rise buildings, roads, bridges, etc. PPC is used in the construction of commercial and residential work, marine works, etc. Not only this but also good for plastering, brick masonry, tiling, roofing, etc.
